| dc.description.abstract | Bridges are critical elements of transport infrastructure, and their safe operation requires continuous condition assessment. Traditional visual inspections are subjective and often fail to detect hidden defects at an early stage. This paper analyzes the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital twins for monitoring and predicting the technical condition of bridges within the Industry 5.0 concept, which prioritizes human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. The study systematizes the architecture of an integrated IoT–digital twin system, covering sensor layers, edge computing, data acquisition, storage, the digital twin core (BIM/GIS, FEM, model updating), AI/ML analytics, decision support, and closed-loop feedback. It also considers specific features of digital twin creation for new and existing bridges and reviews international implementation examples. Key barriers are identified: high sensor costs, heterogeneous data and interoperability problems, AI false alarms, missing BIM for old bridges, sensor reliability, cybersecurity, limited long-term data, and the human-in-the-loop factor. The proposed approach supports the transition from periodic inspections to continuous digital monitoring and predictive maintenance of bridge infrastructure | |
